Vietnamese swimming and the art of saying “insufficient data”

People think swimming is the easiest sport to measure. Whoever is faster wins. But one morning in central Vietnam, a coach looked at two results separated by 0.4 seconds and refused to conclude. He watched video, counted stroke rates, checked underwater depth after the start, then wrote in his notebook: “Not enough data.” That was not a weak answer. It was the only way to turn a pool into a laboratory. Vietnam does not lack talent. Names like Nguyen Thi Anh Vien and Nguyen Huy Hoang achieved great things in Southeast Asia. But outside the region, the gap is not just height or arm span. The biggest gap is information infrastructure. Coaches can point out a wrong technique, yet rarely offer precise numbers about each stroke’s efficiency or each second spent underwater. Sports writing needs the same discipline. When an early analysis layer offers empty fields, the next layer should answer “insufficient data” instead of inventing conclusions. That is the wall between journalism and rumor. A coach should not say “you are slow”; he should say “you lose 0.3 seconds because your head lifts too high when breathing.” A journalist should not say “she lost because she was tired”; he should trace the last fifty meters to find the reason. Numbers do not stand alone. They need a story. Why did a swimmer speed up? Because the rival applied pressure? Because the coach changed the breathing pattern? A number without context is like a touch without a stopwatch. Many people think Vietnam should select talent early and spend money on training plans. I believe this approach misses a blind spot. Talent needs an environment that can read small improvements. A pool without underwater cameras, without stroke analytics, without training logs is like a house without windows. The fall at Toyota was not a stop. It was the starting point for another way of telling a story. I trust discipline: watch tape, check three sources, compare numbers, listen to the athlete. Only then do I write. The conclusion may not be loud, but it will be a path anyone can verify. Vietnam has plenty of people who love sport. Parents bring children to the pool early in the morning. Coaches sit for hours. Young swimmers still swim hard. What is missing is a data language to see progress before the calendar announces results. Once that language is built, touches on the wall will no longer depend on luck. I do not write to conclude. I write to open a small door. When a source is empty, the unknown is the honest truth. That darkness is not a place to fear. It is the only place to install a new light.
