On a Saturday morning in early September, Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre was without big stadium lights, television cameras or ranking boards. Yet 14 women stepped onto the courts with a message bigger than any title: women’s health, sharing and community spirit.
The second annual ladies charity tournament was organised by Julie Snowdon, a Table Tennis England staff member and secretary of Milton Keynes Table Tennis Centre. Entrants were mostly women familiar with the centre’s monthly ladies-only sessions. They came to play, to meet and to contribute to the community, not to chase results.
Organisers placed “fun and fair play” at the heart of the event. Two group rounds led to a main event and a consolation final, allowing players of different levels to stay involved and enjoy the day. The format was a deliberate choice to turn sport into a connecting tool rather than a contest.
The most striking outcome was not in the scores. The tournament raised £650 for Breast Cancer Now, a UK breast cancer charity. More than 100 bras were collected for recycling through Against Breast Cancer, turning old clothes into research funding.
In my experience of watching community table tennis, ranking numbers never tell the whole story. A tournament without technical statistics may be ignored by analysts, but it can reveal the true health of the sport. Milton Keynes shows that table tennis can grow at the grassroots level, with no prize money or ranking points, but with real human connection.
The next ladies session will be held on 1 November from 10am to 12pm at the centre. Donations are still welcome via Julie’s Just Giving page.
Some seeds do not need big stadium lights, only a warm patch of soil to take root.
